Wrexham are set to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson in a deal that could eventually break the club's transfer record, sources have told ESPN. The two clubs have agreed a significant fee, with the final value dependent on add-ons that could push the transfer beyond other deals—like the one for Nathan Broadhead, which will reach £10 million ($13.50m) if clauses are met. Patterson is expected to undergo a medical before potentially featuring in Wrexham's Championship opener against Cardiff City on Monday.

The 26-year-old came through Sunderland's academy and became first-choice goalkeeper during their promotion from League One in 2022, then played a key role as they reached the Premier League via the playoffs in 2025. However, he lost his place after Robin Roefs arrived and made just one appearance in the first half of last season before a loan to Millwall. A move would reunite him with Phil Parkinson, who gave him his Sunderland debut in 2020.

Patterson would add competition in goal and could be a long-term replacement for Arthur Okonkwo and Danny Ward, both in the final years of their contracts. Wrexham have already signed Danny Imray and Ben Whiteman this summer as they prepare for another Championship season after finishing seventh last year. The arrival represents another significant investment from owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac as the club targets promotion to the Premier League.
