Vinicius Cries at City After Banner Revenge

Vinícius Júnior revealed his emotional celebration after scoring against Manchester City was a direct response to last season's mocking banner from City fans. The Brazilian forward netted twice in Real Madrid's 2-1 victory, helping secure a 5-1 aggregate win in the Champions League round of 16.

After missing a penalty in the first leg, Vinícius converted a 22nd-minute spot kick and celebrated by posing, leaning on the corner flag, then making a prolonged crying gesture with both hands. He later made a '4-0' gesture to the crowd at the Etihad Stadium, reflecting Madrid's aggregate lead. The celebration was widely seen as payback for the 'stop crying your heart out' banner displayed when the teams met in February 2025, which featured midfielder Rodri holding his Ballon d'Or.

Vinícius had a busy night with seven shots, three on target, and an expected goals (xG) of 2.58. He also had another goal disallowed in the second half. The Brazil international said he initially wanted teammate Federico Valverde to take the penalty but was given confidence by his captaincy role. Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was substituted at halftime as a precaution ahead of Sunday's LaLiga derby against Atlético Madrid.
