Borussia Dortmund has parted ways with sporting director Sebastian Kehl after a trophyless season, with both sides agreeing to an immediate termination. The former team captain, who helped lead Dortmund to back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, had been in the role since 2022. Managing director Lars Ricken announced the mutual decision, noting that summer represents the right time for change.

Kehl joined Dortmund from Freiburg in January 2002 and played a key role in the club's 2002 German championship win alongside Ricken. He took over as director of licensed players in 2018 before being promoted to sporting director. The timing allows both the club and Kehl to prepare for the upcoming season and gives him time to consider his next professional steps.

The departure marks a significant change in Dortmund's sporting leadership as the club undergoes a major shakeup. CEO Carsten Cramer emphasized the need for changes ahead of the next season, while Kehl expressed his deep connection to the club, saying Dortmund and the Südtribüne will always hold a special place in his heart.
