Sam Kerr Returns to Gotham FC After Chelsea Exit

Forward Sam Kerr has signed with reigning NWSL champions Gotham FC through the 2030 season, marking her return to the club she played for from 2015-2017. The Australian striker became a free agent after her Chelsea contract expired, ending six years with the English powerhouse where she won five league titles and twice claimed the Women's Super League Golden Boot.

Kerr remains the NWSL's all-time regular-season goals leader with 77 career goals, despite not playing in the league since 2019. However, she missed out on the new High Impact Player rule eligibility due to missing 20 months of play following an ACL tear in January 2024. The HIP rule allows teams to pay star players up to $1 million over the salary cap, but Kerr fails to meet the criteria.

Gotham acquired $350,000 in allocation money by trading defender Lilly Reale to Boston Legacy FC, helping manage the salary cap constraints. Kerr cannot debut until the NWSL transfer window opens on July 14, with Gotham hosting Washington Spirit the next day in the Queens Classic at Citi Field. The 32-year-old recently married American midfielder Kristie Mewis and returns to the rebranded club that moved from Red Bull Arena to a customized training facility.

This signing represents a major coup for Gotham FC as they build toward defending their championship. Kerr's experience and goal-scoring record provide immediate impact for a team looking to establish itself in New York City's competitive sports market.
