Pochettino's Gamble: Reyna Called Up Despite Lack of Minutes

United States manager Mauricio Pochettino has selected Gio Reyna for the upcoming friendlies against Belgium and Portugal despite the winger's minimal playing time at Borussia Monchengladbach this season. Reyna has only featured for 26 minutes since the start of 2026 and hasn't played in the last two months due to a muscle injury. Pochettino justified the call-up based on Reyna's strong performances during the November international window, where he scored against Paraguay and assisted in a win over Uruguay.

The manager emphasized Reyna's status as a 'very special talent' and the need to assess his current level before the May World Cup roster announcement. 'Before the last decision for the last roster for the World Cup, I think it's good to see players that maybe are not playing too much, like in that case of Gio,' Pochettino stated. 'But that is a very talented player, and we know how he can add to the national team.' Both friendlies will be held in Atlanta on March 28 and 31.
