The football used by Diego Maradona to score his infamous "Hand of God" goal against England in the 1986 World Cup has sold for $3.35 million. The Adidas Azterra ball was auctioned at Heritage Auctions on Saturday, falling significantly short of its pre-sale estimate.

Despite a starting price of $2.5 million, the item failed to meet the Dallas-based firm's valuation of $10 million. Heritage Auctions described the ball as "the most significant football," noting its historical weight in the quarterfinal match where Argentina defeated England 2-1.

Maradona, who passed away in November 2020, famously claimed the first goal was "a little from the head of Maradona, and a little with the hand of God." He also scored the subsequent "Goal of the Century" in that same game. The ball was originally collected by referee Ali Bin Nasser, who kept it for decades before selling it in 2022.

Although this specific ball did not reach its high valuation, related Maradona memorabilia continues to command record prices. For instance, the shirt worn during the 1986 final sold for $9.28 million at Sotheby's in London in 2022.
