Napoli striker Romelu Lukaku is facing potential disciplinary action after failing to return to training, sparking controversy at the Italian club. The 32-year-old Belgian international pulled out of national team duty for friendlies against the United States and Mexico, citing physical issues, but instead traveled to Belgium for treatment.

Lukaku has struggled with injuries since joining Napoli in 2024, making only seven substitute appearances this season following a serious hamstring injury. The club issued a statement confirming Lukaku did not respond to their call to return to training and reserved the right to take disciplinary action. In an Instagram post, Lukaku explained he was dealing with inflammation and fluid around his hip flexor muscle near scar tissue, describing it as his second injury since returning in November.

The disciplinary situation adds pressure to Napoli's season as they sit third in Serie A, seven points behind leaders Inter Milan. Lukaku insisted his commitment to the club remains strong, stating he could never turn his back on Napoli and wants to play and win for his team. However, the club must now decide whether to discipline their star striker or allow him to continue his rehabilitation program in Belgium.
