Larry Berg, part owner of LAFC, has been selected as the new commissioner of Major League Soccer. He will succeed Don Garber, who is set to transition to chairman in 2027 after leading the league since 1999. Berg's appointment marks the third commissioner in MLS history, and he will officially take over on January 1.

Berg expressed his honor in leading MLS into its next era, emphasizing opportunities to strengthen competition, develop players, deepen fan connections, and elevate the league globally. He brings a background in private equity and finance, alongside his experience with the successful LAFC franchise. To ensure impartiality, Berg will divest his ownership interest in LAFC.

Garber oversaw the league's expansion from 10 to 30 clubs. Berg will inherit the task of guiding MLS through significant changes, including a new season format beginning in 2027 and managing an upcoming media rights deal with Apple TV concluding in 2029. His leadership is seen as crucial for building on the league's momentum and driving future growth.
