Jorge Jesus Named Portugal Coach Through 2030 World Cup

Portugal appointed Jorge Jesus as national team head coach on a four-year contract running through the 2030 World Cup. The 71-year-old was unveiled Friday at the FPF headquarters in Lisbon, succeeding Spaniard Roberto Martínez whose contract expired after Portugal's World Cup exit. Jesus left Al Nassr in May after securing the Saudi Pro League title.

This marks Jesus's first national team role in a 36-year career spanning 11 Portuguese clubs, including Benfica where he won 10 trophies. He also guided Flamengo to five major titles in 2019-20 and led Al Hilal to a domestic treble last season. Crucially, he already knows Cristiano Ronaldo and João Félix from their time together at Al Nassr.

Portugal's urgency stemmed from a disappointing World Cup campaign where the 2025 Nations League winners fell 1-0 to Spain in the round of 16. The federation moved quickly to install a coach with deep domestic knowledge and proven success across multiple leagues.

Jesus's first test arrives September 24 against Wales in the Nations League Group D opener. His appointment signals a pragmatic shift toward a manager who understands the Portuguese player pool intimately, but the real measure will be whether he can translate club dominance to tournament football with an aging core built around Ronaldo.
