The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is reportedly nearing a decision on its next national team coach, with veteran manager Jorge Jesus emerging as the leading candidate. Sources indicate the FPF aims to announce Roberto Martinez's successor by the end of the week. Martinez departed following Portugal's World Cup exit, ending his contract.

Jesus, 71, is a free agent after leaving Saudi club Al Nassr in May, where he coached Cristiano Ronaldo and João Félix. While Jesus has no prior national team experience, he was considered for the Brazil job. His club career boasts significant success, including 10 trophies with Benfica, five with Flamengo, and a domestic treble with Al Hilal.

FPF president Pedro Proença stated the new coach must understand Portuguese soccer and align with the federation's winning mentality. The FPF is eager to move past their World Cup disappointment and prepare for upcoming competitions, including the 2030 World Cup, which Portugal will co-host. The appointment is seen as the start of a "new era of victories."
