Infantino: World Cup ticket resale to drive up prices

FIFA president Gianni Infantino admitted that ticket resale will inflate prices for the 2026 World Cup across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. With demand so high that every match will sell out, a draw is needed for initial allocation. On FIFA's own resale platform, a final ticket was listed for $230,000.

Infantino, speaking at Davos, said U.S. law permits resale, so FIFA must allow it. The governing body takes a 30% cut from each transaction, meaning it profits twice. This model contrasts sharply with the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where FIFA controlled resale prices and charged lower fees.

Fans and groups like Football Supporters Europe have condemned the pricing, calling it a "monumental betrayal." With face-value tickets reaching $8,680 and resale prices soaring, many supporters face being priced out. The situation highlights the massive scale of demand for the expanded 48-team tournament.
