Infantino Reported to IOC Over Trump Ties at World Cup

A complaint alleging FIFA president Gianni Infantino breached political neutrality rules in dealings with President Donald Trump has been submitted to the IOC. Human rights nonprofit Fair Square says Infantino, an IOC member since 2020, repeatedly violated the Olympic Charter and ethics code, most recently in the Folarin Balogun affair.

The U.S. striker's one-match ban was suspended by FIFA's disciplinary committee, freeing him for the World Cup round-of-16 match against Belgium. This followed a phone call from Trump to Infantino, though Infantino insists FIFA committees are independent. Disciplinary committee chair Mohammad Al Kamali made the decision alone, unprecedented in published cases.

Fair Square alleges five clear breaches of IOC political neutrality rules and prima facie evidence of two further serious breaches, including possible acquiescence to Trump pressure to circumvent disciplinary rules during the 2026 World Cup and promotion of a FIFA fan site linked to Trump data-harvesting.

Fair Square filed a similar complaint to FIFA's ethics committee in December. The Norwegian football federation and 50 European Parliament members have urged FIFA to address it. FIFA and the IOC have been contacted for comment.
