Flick Takes Blame for Barcelona's Injury Crisis

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has taken full responsibility for the club's mounting injury crisis after losing key players Frenkie de Jong, Jules Koundé, and Alejandro Balde to hamstring injuries in recent weeks. The setbacks have left Barça with just 16 available outfield players heading into their LaLiga match against Athletic Club. Flick dismissed suggestions that medical or fitness staff were at fault.

Speaking ahead of the San Mamés trip, Flick emphasized that accountability rests with him as head coach. The injuries have compounded Barcelona's challenges following their Copa del Rey exit to Atlético Madrid, where both Koundé and Balde were ruled out for the next month. Andreas Christensen and Gavi are also sidelined, further depleting the squad.

Despite the personnel shortages, Flick confirmed that Robert Lewandowski will return wearing a protective mask after recovering from a fractured eye socket. Meanwhile, 18-year-old La Masia product Xavi Espart has impressed during training and could feature in upcoming matches. Flick likened the versatile youngster to Philipp Lahm in his ability to play midfield or full-back. With Barcelona holding a four-point lead atop LaLiga, Flick must navigate these injury challenges while preparing for Tuesday's Champions League round-of-16 clash against Newcastle United.
