Flamengo Fires Filipe Luís Despite 8-0 Win

Flamengo have sacked manager Filipe Luís just days after an 8-0 thrashing of Madureira that secured their place in the Carioca Championship final. The Brazilian club announced the decision following a disastrous start to the season, with the Rio de Janeiro side sitting 11th in Serie A after collecting just four points from three matches. The club's worst start in a decade.

Despite winning 10 trophies as both player and coach, including two Brazilian league titles and two Copa Libertadores, Luís couldn't replicate his success in 2025. Flamengo lost the Brazilian Super Cup to Corinthians and fell to Lanús in the South American Recopa. The 40-year-old had recently signed a two-year contract extension in December after guiding the club to multiple titles last season.

Assistant coach Ivan Palanco and physical trainer Diogo Linhares also left the club. Flamengo are reportedly in talks with Portuguese manager Leonardo Jardim to take over. Jardim has been unemployed since departing Cruzeiro in December. The timing of Luís's dismissal, following a dominant cup victory, underscores the pressure on managers in Brazilian football despite recent achievements.
