Flamengo Fires Filipe Luís After 8-0 Win Despite Trophy Success

Flamengo have sacked Filipe Luís as manager just days after an 8-0 victory over Madureira secured their place in the Carioca Championship final. The Brazilian club announced the decision following their worst start to a season in a decade, despite Filipe Luís leading them to multiple trophies in 2025. The 40-year-old former Chelsea left-back had signed a contract extension in December.

Flamengo cited poor overall performance as the reason for the dismissal, despite the emphatic win. The Rio de Janeiro club lost the Brazilian Super Cup to Corinthians and fell to Lanús in the South American Recopa. They currently sit 11th in Brazil's Serie A with just four points from three games. Assistant coach Ivan Palanco and physical trainer Diogo Linhares also left the club.

The former player turned coach arrived at Flamengo in 2019 as a player and helped win 10 trophies, including two Brazilian league titles and two Copa Libertadores. As manager since 2024, he steered Flamengo to 64 wins in 101 games with only 15 defeats. Sources indicate Flamengo are in talks with Portuguese manager Leonardo Jardim to replace him.
