FIFA will closely monitor the situation in Iran following US military strikes, as the Middle Eastern nation prepares to compete in the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States. President Trump announced missile strikes on Saturday, describing it as a "major combat operation" while holding the FIFA Peace Prize awarded by FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Iran qualified for the tournament through the Asian Football Confederation and is scheduled to play in Group G against Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt. The team's matches in the US include games in Los Angeles and Seattle, with the Egypt match set for June 26. FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafstrom stated that officials had a meeting to discuss the situation but called it "premature to comment in detail."

Grafstrom emphasized that FIFA's focus remains on ensuring a safe World Cup for all participating teams. "Our focus is on a safe World Cup with all the teams participating," he said at the International Football Association Board's annual general meeting in Cardiff, Wales. The organization plans to maintain communication with all three host governments as it monitors developments around the world.
