Chicago Stars fire GM Richard Feuz amid poor NWSL start

The Chicago Stars fired general manager Richard Feuz on Wednesday as the team languishes 15th in the 16-team NWSL with nine points from 11 games. President Karen Leetzow said the club lacks a compelling product and is not competitive. Chicago's minus-17 goal difference is the league's worst.

Feuz joined in February 2024 and led the Stars to the playoffs as the No. 8 seed that season. But the team finished last in 2025 and went 17-36-14 across all competitions under his tenure. He took a Moneyball approach to spending, a strategy Leetzow said disappointed ownership.

This season opened with a 4-0 loss to Angel City. Chicago lost 4-0 to the North Carolina Courage on May 16. "It sucks," said head coach Martin Sjögren, who was hired in August but didn't coach his first game until 2026. A rare positive: Mallory Swanson returned from maternity leave and scored the winner Sunday vs. nine-player Bay FC.

Leetzow and assistant GM Beatrice Caliani will share duties during the search for a new GM. Leetzow wants an experienced candidate, "maybe a little gray hair." The NWSL transfer window opens July 14, and Leetzow said talks are already underway to strengthen the roster.
