Chelsea Target Granit Xhaka in Leadership Midfield Move

Chelsea are exploring a deal to sign Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka as incoming manager Xabi Alonso looks to add experience to his squad. The 33-year-old Swiss international, who joined Sunderland in a €20 million deal last summer, is currently representing his country at the World Cup and turns 34 in September.

Alonso knows Xhaka well from their time together at Bayer Leverkusen, where they won the Bundesliga title in 2023-24. Chelsea's current oldest player is 28-year-old Tosin Adarabioyo, reflecting the club's recent focus on young talent. However, last season's disappointing tenth-place finish has prompted a shift in strategy, with the new manager granted significant influence over transfer decisions.

Sunderland are reluctant to sell their captain, who has become a popular figure since arriving from Leverkusen. The Championship side would demand a substantial fee despite Xhaka's age, complicating any potential deal. Meanwhile, Chelsea have rejected Como's £22m offer for Trevoh Chalobah, holding out for £35m instead.

This pursuit signals Chelsea's recognition that youth alone cannot address their recent struggles. Xhaka's leadership credentials and proven track record could prove essential as Alonso rebuilds the squad for a title challenge.
