Chelsea eye Granit Xhaka reunion with Xabi Alonso at Sunderland

Chelsea have identified Granit Xhaka as a potential midfield target, though no formal approach has been made to Sunderland. The Black Cats insist the Switzerland international is not for sale, despite Chelsea's search for experienced Premier League performers. Xhaka joined Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen for £13m last summer and played a crucial role in their survival and Europa League qualification.

The 33-year-old contributed one goal and six assists across 34 league appearances last season. He previously worked under Alonso at Leverkusen, winning the Bundesliga title during a 99-appearance spell before his move to Wearside. Earlier transfer windows saw Xhaka consider London returns, with West Ham showing interest that ultimately came to nothing.

Chelsea's interest follows their £43m capture of Marco Palestra from Atalanta, Alonso's first signing as manager. The Blues have also enquired about Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix while Como pursue Trevoh Chalobah. Xhaka's Premier League pedigree makes him attractive, though his age means Chelsea won't overspend.

Sunderland's stance remains firm, with the club prioritizing squad stability after securing European football. Xhaka's leadership and experience could prove invaluable for Chelsea's rebuild, but any deal faces significant obstacles given the player's importance to his current team.
