Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has declared he has "no confidence" in FIFA President Gianni Infantino, citing a "fatal" governance failure in the World Cup stake sale plan. Carney, who co-hosted the 2026 World Cup with the U.S. and Mexico, stated Infantino's failure to consult senior advisors was a critical error.

Infantino recently abandoned a proposal to create a $20 billion company for the World Cup with private investors, including the Kushner family, after facing intense opposition. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham also criticized Infantino, calling him "the wrong man to lead" world soccer. UEFA and other confederations threatened boycotts if the plan proceeded.

Despite Infantino's reversal, UEFA stated it would work to prevent similar proposals. While Infantino retains some support, Carney's comments add to mounting criticism. Infantino recently held an emergency FIFA meeting in Rabat, Morocco, amidst pressure regarding his leadership.
