Argentine Clubs Strike Over Tapia Ban

Professional soccer clubs in Argentina have announced a four-day strike from March 5-8 in protest against judicial actions targeting Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia. The strike, decided unanimously by the professional league's executive committee, will suspend all first division and other league matches during the period.

The protest follows a judge's summons for Tapia to testify on March 5 regarding allegations of misappropriating 19 billion pesos ($13 million) in social security contributions between 2024 and 2025. The investigation stems from a complaint filed by Argentina's Customs Revenue and Control Agency (ARCA), which claims the AFA failed to deposit withheld amounts within required deadlines.

Judge Diego Amarante has also issued a travel ban against Tapia and summoned four other AFA officials, including treasurer Pablo Toviggino and former Racing Club president Víctor Blanco, to appear for questioning. The AFA has denied the debt, stating it made voluntary tax payments before due dates. The strike represents a significant escalation in tensions between Argentina's soccer establishment and judicial authorities over financial accountability.
