The National Hockey League unveiled its shortlist for the Willie O'Ree Community Hero Award on Monday, inviting fans to cast votes through May 24 at NHL.com/OReeAward. Six individuals—three from the United States and three from Canada—will compete for the honor, with the eventual winner earning a $30,000 charitable donation and the runners‑up receiving $10,000 each.

American nominees showcase inclusive programs. Steven Thompson co‑founded the Seattle Pride Hockey Association, which runs one of the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ tournaments with about 300 participants. Bill Tobias directs the Central Park North Stars, an ASHA‑affiliated team serving athletes with intellectual and physical disabilities since 2014. Kendal Troutman leads 24 Degrees of Color, using clinics and mentorship to open ice time for Black and Latinx youth.

Canadian finalists continue the diversity theme. Doug Grandy founded the Rink Rebels Female Hockey Organization, expanding girls’ access to the sport through a community‑driven model. Vinnie Matteo created Avalanche Kidz, offering hockey to children with autism and other neuro‑divergent conditions. Sonny Sekhon launched the Punjabi Elite League, a ball‑hockey circuit that now hosts over 200 players and fuels South Asian participation. Winners will be announced in June.
