Werenski Blocks Stars Trade as Blue Jackets Face Salary Cap Crisis

Zach Werenski has exercised his full no-movement clause to reject a trade from the Columbus Blue Jackets to the Dallas Stars, an NHL source confirmed. The Norris Trophy winner informed Columbus he won't re-sign when his contract expires after the 2027-28 season, prompting the Jackets to explore trade options for their franchise defenseman.

The Stars and Blue Jackets had agreed in principle on a deal centered around 24-year-old defenseman Thomas Harley. However, Werenski prefers remaining in the Eastern Conference, with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs reportedly on his wish list. Columbus GM Don Waddell acknowledged internal matters need addressing while the team faces mounting uncertainty.

Werenski, entering his 11th NHL season after being drafted eighth overall in 2015, averaged over 26 minutes of ice time and led Columbus with more than 80 points in each of the past two seasons. His decision compounds Columbus' offseason woes after forward Kirill Marchenko, who led the team with 27 goals last season, also declined to sign an extension.

Dallas now faces its second failed blockbuster trade after Jason Robertson rejected a move to Seattle. Werenski's rejection leaves Columbus scrambling to find a deal that works for both sides before his contract expires.
