The Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill said signing winger Jason Robertson to a long‑term contract remains his goal after the two sides settled a contentious negotiation with a one‑year deal this week.

Robertson, who led the Stars with 96 points and tied for team‑lead with 45 goals last season, became a restricted free agent. Unable to agree on a new contract, he elected salary arbitration and the teams capped it with a one‑year, $12 million agreement.

During the offseason the Stars explored a trade, and the Seattle Kraken offered an 8‑year, $15 million deal, whichscribers declined. Robertson stated he wants to focus on the upcoming season and a potential Cup run.

The one‑year contract begins on Jan. 1, and Nill expects further talks before then. With cap flexibility after next season, the Stars may pursue a longer contract, while Robertson will enter unrestricted free agency next summer.
