The Cincinnati Bengals will face safety Jessie Bates III in Madrid, evoking mixed emotions. Bates, a key player in the Bengals' Super Bowl run, left for the Atlanta Falcons in free agency. He has since become one of the NFL's top safeties.
Bates expressed pride in his growth with Atlanta but noted the sting of not playing in meaningful games since leaving Cincinnati. The Bengals have struggled to replace him, trying four players in his role at a combined cost of $77.9 million. This offseason, they signed Bryan Cook to a $40 million deal to address the position.
Coach Zac Taylor praised Bates' development and impact, while defensive coordinator Al Golden expressed confidence in the current secondary.
