Melinda French Gates is set to become a minority investor in the Seattle Kraken, pending NHL approval, partnering with majority owner Samantha Holloway. The Microsoft Foundation co-founder brings significant wealth and influence to a franchise looking to improve both its business operations and on-ice performance. This marks French Gates' first ownership stake in a major professional sports team.

French Gates told ESPN she was drawn to Holloway's vision and the opportunity to expand sports access in the community. She emphasized the role sports play in bringing people together and praised Holloway's tech background and innovative leadership approach. The partnership represents growing female representation in sports ownership, as French Gates noted about women coming into their full power.

Holloway is assembling an ownership group to potentially bid for an NBA franchise, aiming to bring the SuperSonics back to Seattle. The Kraken ownership's recent acquisition of majority stake in Climate Pledge Arena strengthens this position. However, Holloway stressed that improving the team's 34-37-11 record and playoff drought remains the top priority, hiring Sportsology for an independent review of hockey operations.

French Gates believes the Kraken can become Stanley Cup contenders within a decade. She pointed to Seattle's sports culture, citing the Mariners' playoff run and Seahawks' success. The investment aligns with the One Roof Foundation's mission to expand youth access to hockey, addressing the need to grow the sport's fanbase for long-term success.
