Everett Silvertips opened their first-ever Memorial Cup with a 5-3 win over the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, with Jesse Heslop, Lukas Kaplan, and Matias Vanhanen all finding the net. Goalie Anders Miller turned aside 22 shots as the WHL champions showed they belong in this four-team round-robin. They'll chase history as the fourth U.S.-based franchise to claim the trophy, following Portland, Spokane, and Saginaw.

Shantz scored from behind the net off Heslop's pass to give Everett a 3-2 lead with six minutes left in the second. Carter Bear, the 13th overall pick by Detroit last summer, buried the next shift off Landon DuPont's feed after a turnover. Chicoutimi's Alex Huang briefly tied it, but Kaplan answered 33 seconds later. Lucas Beckman stopped 32 shots for the Quebec Maritimes champions.

The Silvertips reached the Memorial Cup after losing just two games in four playoff rounds. They hadn't played since May 15, while Chicoutimi last suited up May 17. Everett faces Kitchener on Monday, while Chicoutimi drops in on Kelowna on Sunday.
