Why Dolphins Kept Achane, Cowboys Tagged Pickens: 2026 NFL Questions

The 2026 NFL offseason has left fans with several unresolved questions as teams navigate rebuilds and roster decisions. The Dolphins, clearly in transition after cutting Tua Tagovailoa and trading Jaylen Waddle to Denver, surprisingly held onto running back De'Von Achane despite having just one year left on his rookie contract worth $5.767 million.

New coach Jeff Hafley and GM Jon-Eric Sullivan view Achane as a foundational player worth extending rather than trading. Achane averaged 1,445 scrimmage yards and 12 touchdowns per season in his first three years, and Miami wasn't interested in completely stripping their roster for a first-year coaching staff. The Dolphins also need players to build around during their reset.

The Cowboys franchise-tagged George Pickens rather than extending him long-term after he caught 93 passes for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns in his first Dallas season. Dallas already pays CeeDee Lamb $34 million per year, making two elite receiver contracts a cap challenge. Team president Stephen Jones also noted Pickens is still new to Dallas and hasn't built the same history as a player the team drafted and developed.

The Giants passed on Caleb Downs at No. 10 to select offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa, prioritizing protection for second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart over adding another defensive cornerstone alongside Arvell Reese.
