Vikings re-sign Carson Wentz for QB depth

The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to terms with quarterback Carson Wentz on a one-year deal, adding experienced depth to their crowded quarterback room. Wentz, 33, returns to the team where he started five games last season as a backup, joining newcomers Kyler Murray and incumbents J.J. McCarthy and Max Brosmer in what promises to be a competitive quarterback battle.

Wentz's return comes as the Vikings seek to upgrade at the position after missing the playoffs in 2023 and 2025 due to injuries and poor performances. Last season, he stepped in for McCarthy after a high ankle sprain, leading the team to a 2-3 record while playing through a dislocated left shoulder. Over that stretch, Wentz threw for 1,216 yards and six touchdowns with five interceptions, producing four of the team's top five offensive performances based on total yards.

His signing creates an intriguing dynamic, with Wentz competing for both the starting role against Murray and the No. 2 spot against McCarthy. The move also provides insurance after undrafted rookie Brosmer struggled with a 14.3 QBR in limited action last season. For Wentz, it marks his first return to a team in consecutive years since his final season with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020.
