Free agent quarterback Trey Lance has agreed to return to the Los Angeles Chargers on a one-year deal worth up to $6.75 million, the team announced Saturday. Sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the contract includes incentives that could push the total value to that amount. The 25-year-old quarterback was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.

Lance's career has been marked by limited opportunities despite his high draft status. He started just four games in two seasons with the 49ers, posting a 2-2 record while throwing for 797 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions. An ankle injury derailed his momentum and paved the way for Brock Purdy's emergence in San Francisco. The Dallas Cowboys acquired Lance in 2023 for a fourth-round pick, but he never played a snap that season and started only one game in 2024.

With the Chargers, Lance appeared in limited action, including one start in the season finale against the Denver Broncos where he completed 20 of 44 passes for 146 yards and one interception. His return to Los Angeles comes as the team looks to add depth at the quarterback position behind their starter.
