Former NC State quarterback Philip Rivers, 44, is in serious discussions to become the Wolfpack's next head coach, sources told ESPN. Rivers, who played at NC State from 2000 to 2003 and holds school records with 13,484 passing yards and 95 touchdowns, is currently in his sixth season coaching at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama. He has indicated he wants to finish the current high school season before any move.
Rivers emerged as the favorite to replace Dave Doeren, who was fired Oct. 24 after 14 seasons as the program's all-time winningest coach. While no deal is close and Rivers hasn't met with NC State officials in person, there has been outreach about assembling a front office. Rivers previously interviewed for the Buffalo Bills' head coaching vacancy last year but withdrew.
The connection runs deep: Rivers' son Gunner, a top-200 recruit, committed to NC State in February. "NC State's special to me," Rivers said recently. "You never say never, but there's nothing imminent."
