Bill Barnwell examines the Bears' acquisition of Jeffery Simmons, who was traded using two first-round picks. Chicago views Simmons as a defensive cornerstone to stabilize a unit that ranked 31st in DVOA. The trade reflects a trend of teams hoarding top selections since the 2011 slotted draft structure, though history shows such deals rarely succeed.
Barnwell notes that while Simmons is a disruptive pass-rusher, he cannot single-handedly fix a struggling defense. For Tennessee, the move signals an acknowledgment they are not contending, raising questions about whether the return transforms their rebuild or merely represents another aggressive maneuver by general manager Ryan Poles. The piece evaluates whether this shift alters the NFC power balance or if the Bears will look back on this as another missed opportunity to land a difference-maker.
