Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton stated the team is "staying the course" with outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper, who is participating in training camp despite facing domestic violence charges. Cooper was arrested twice in June and excused from mandatory minicamp.

"We're staying the course with the league protocol, with the club protocol, relative to what we've been advised to do," Payton said. Cooper faces a felony charge for assault by strangulation and other misdemeanors. He is scheduled to appear in court on August 31. The NFL may also suspend Cooper for up to six games under its personal conduct policy.

Cooper, 28, reported for training camp and participated in practice. Payton has deferred to the NFL's investigation and the legal process, noting that the Broncos have set guidelines for Cooper, including therapy. Payton declined to comment on specific details of the police investigation, citing the ongoing legal process.

"There's a process relative to the league, relative to the legal process, and then as that all comes together, we can make the right decision [on Cooper's future with the team]," Payton stated. Cooper, a seventh-round pick in 2021, has recorded 31.5 sacks in 81 career games with the Broncos.
