The New England Patriots have released running back Antonio Gibson after two seasons with the team, the organization announced Monday. Gibson, who was set to count $4.14 million against the salary cap in 2026, is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in Week 5 of the 2025 season. The 27-year-old had been competing for a depth role behind starters Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson.

Gibson enters his seventh NFL season after spending his first four years with the Washington Commanders from 2020-2023. Last season, he made a significant impact on special teams with a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Miami in Week 2, earning AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. That play helped spark the Patriots' first victory of the campaign.

The release comes as Gibson was scheduled to earn a base salary of $2.85 million in the final year of his three-year contract, with no guaranteed money remaining. The Patriots now have Stevenson, Henderson, Terrell Jennings, Elijah Mitchell, and Lan Larison on their running back depth chart. Gibson finishes his Patriots tenure with 3,287 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns across 83 career NFL games.
