New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft announced Saturday that the team has offered Pro Bowl cornerback Christian Gonzalez a contract that would make him the highest-paid player to ever play that position in the NFL. Kraft noted the offer also represents the highest contract in Patriots franchise history. The announcement came before the team's first training camp practice in Foxborough, Mass., where Kraft and Gonzalez shook hands during drills.

The cornerback market has escalated rapidly, with contracts for top players now averaging more than $30 million per season. In March, the Los Angeles Rams made Trent McDuffie the league's highest-paid cornerback with a four-year, $124 million deal. Gonzalez, selected 17th overall in the 2023 draft, enters his fourth season and is eligible for an extension for the first time. He has two years remaining on his rookie deal with a $2.259 million base salary this year.

Head coach Mike Vrabel acknowledged ongoing negotiations, praising Gonzalez's impact and character. Gonzalez shares an agent with Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who is also extension-eligible, but Vrabel dismissed any connection between the two situations, stating the Patriots are negotiating solely with Gonzalez's representatives.
