The Dominoes Award: edge rushers

The Panthers got beat out at the 11th hour on Milton Williams during last year's free agency; that was not going to happen again. This time, they got their ex-Eagles defensive lineman, signing Jaelan Phillips to a jaw-dropping four-year, $120 million deal with $80 million guaranteed. Odafe Oweh followed with a four-year, $100 million deal with the Commanders ($25 million per year), while Boye Mafe joined the Bengals on a three-year, $60 million deal. These contracts reshaped the edge rusher landscape, with Phillips becoming the eighth-highest-paid edge rusher in football and the 11th-highest-paid defensive player overall.

Phillips' $30 million annual salary far exceeded projections, reflecting the Panthers' desperation to secure a reliable pass rusher. His deal also influenced other teams, as the market for top-tier edge rushers surged. Meanwhile, Oweh's $25 million per year and Mafe's $20 million per year deals highlighted the growing financial stakes for defensive ends. Despite Mafe's injury history, his performance in 2023 and potential for growth made him a tempting target for the Bengals.

The contracts also revealed strategic decisions. The Titans, for instance, reunited with former players, while the Falcons secured Bryce Young and Bryce Young's development. These moves underscore the league's focus on building competitive rosters through strategic free agency moves. With the cap space and competitive balance at play, these deals set a new benchmark for defensive talent acquisition.
