Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed Monday he's considering moving All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell to left tackle for the 2026 season. 'That's easy. I've talked to him. We're ready to do that, if need be,' Campbell said at the NFL annual league meeting. 'And all he wants is a couple of days to work his left hand in the stance a little bit.'

Campbell views the potential switch as a strategic move to bolster the offensive line after Detroit ranked 20th in run block win rate and 30th in pass block win rate in 2025. The Lions have already made significant changes this offseason, releasing veteran left tackle Taylor Decker and signing new linemen including Cade Mays, Larry Borom, and Ben Bartch. Sewell has experience at left tackle, having played 647 regular-season snaps there during his rookie year and in college at Oregon.

Despite not playing left tackle full-time since 2019, Campbell expressed strong confidence in Sewell's ability to make the transition. 'It's a little bit like riding a bike for him,' Campbell said, noting Sewell's versatility provides valuable flexibility as Detroit retools its offensive line. The move would also give the Lions insurance as they integrate new starters along the line.
