K.J. Wright Promoted to 49ers Linebackers Coach

As Robert Saleh prepared to leave the San Francisco 49ers for the Tennessee Titans in January, head coach Kyle Shanahan made clear that K.J. Wright, the defensive quality‑control coach, was not moving on. 'It was an understanding from the beginning,' Saleh laughed. 'Off‑limits.'

Shanahan’s decision reflected a short‑term plan to promote Wright to linebackers coach and the belief that he could become a coordinator quickly, following the path of Houston Texans coach De Meco Ryans. 'He's going to be a coordinator really quick,' Saleh said.

Wright, 37, adds a decade of NFL playing experience, including 985 tackles for the Seattle Seahawks and a brief stint with the Las Vegas Raiders. After retiring in 2021, he almost left the sport but was drawn back by former teammate Richard Sherman, who recommended him to Shanahan.

In his new role, Wright learned the grind of coaching, working under linebackers coach Johnny Holland and learning from defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. He now focuses on helping star linebackers Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw improve, aiming to become a top‑tier coach while staying grounded in his current duties.
