Robert Saleh fulfills father's dream as Titans coach

Robert Saleh stepped onto the Tennessee Titans sideline on Jan. 19, fulfilling a childhood promise forged during a ninth‑grade Oklahoma drill coached by his father, Sam. The Lebanese‑American family watched from the front row as the New York Jets leader took the helm of a franchise that finished 2023 with a 7‑10 record, hoping to reverse its fortunes this season.

Saleh’s climb began after a $800‑a‑week banking stint ended in 2001, when 9/11 spurred him to abandon a stable career for coaching. He endured graduate roles at Michigan State, Central Michigan and Georgia, surviving on stipends and cash slips from his mother. Those early sacrifices paved the way for a defensive coordinator role that led a 2020 Super Bowl run.

Family remains Saleh’s anchor; his wife Sanaa and eight children travel with him, while his brother David credits their father’s early football influence for the coach’s perseverance. Titans’ owner Shawn Meyers expects the new regime to improve a defense that ranked 30th last this season. Saleh’s first game will test whether his personal grit can definitely translate into wins for Nashville soon.
