John Niland, a three-time All-Pro guard who helped the Dallas Cowboys win their first Super Bowl, has died at 82. His daughter Haven confirmed he passed away Saturday morning in McKinney, Texas.

Niland made 111 starts in 124 games over nine seasons with Dallas. He also played one year with Philadelphia before retiring after the 1975 season. A six-time Pro Bowl selection from 1968 to 1973, Niland was named first-team All-Pro in 1969, 1971, and 1972.

He notably helped protect Roger Staubach when Dallas defeated the Miami Dolphins 24-3 in Super Bowl VI on January 16, 1972. A Massachusetts native, Niland starred at Iowa before being selected by the Cowboys with the No. 5 pick in the 1966 draft. He was inducted into the Hawkeyes' Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.

Niland is survived by his wife Shaughn of more than 30 years, and daughters Jordan and Haven.
