"I really hate the fact that something I was a part of could've been a distraction for this team," Smith stated upon reporting to training camp. He emphasized the hard work put in by his teammates and his desire to move forward from the situation. Smith confirmed he discussed the matter with coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey.

The dispute occurred on June 21 at Smith's home, with the woman claiming assault. Police reports noted minor injuries to both parties. The case was ultimately declared inactive due to a lack of follow-up statements. This incident was one of three encounters Smith had with Davie police in three months, including two traffic stops.

Smith, acquired in a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders, stated he is "a lot more wiser" and grateful for another opportunity with the Jets, his former team from 2013 to 2016. Veteran leader Demario Davis confirmed conversations about the allegations, highlighting the team's close-knit brotherhood.
