Frank Ragnow's NFL Comeback Ends After Failed Physical, Lions Retirement Final

Frank Ragnow officially closed the door on his NFL career Friday, confirming his retirement is permanent after a failed comeback attempt. The former Detroit Lions All-Pro center tried to return in late November but couldn't pass his physical due to a Grade 3 hamstring strain that ended his brief attempt to rejoin the team.

Ragnow explained he was trying to will himself back onto the field, but his body refused to cooperate. He played through significant injuries during his seven-year career, including a fractured throat in 2021 and a partially torn pectoral muscle in 2024. Despite staying in shape, the hamstring injury proved too severe, leaving him disappointed but at peace with the decision.

The Lions struggled immensely without their anchor center in 2025, missing the postseason after back-to-back NFC North titles. Detroit ranked 30th in pass block win rate at 55.2%, protecting quarterback Jared Goff became a major issue. Ragnow admitted it was difficult watching his teammates compete without him.

Ragnow maintains positive relationships with the organization despite reports about repaying part of his 2021 signing bonus. Several Lions linemen attended his charity Skeet Shoot Showdown event, and he emphasized his love and respect for the team while focusing on family and his foundation work.
