Bears Dispute Falcons GM Hire Compensation

The Chicago Bears are challenging the NFL's decision not to award them compensatory draft picks after the Atlanta Falcons hired Ian Cunningham as their new general manager. Cunningham, who served as Chicago's assistant GM from 2022 to 2025, was hired by Atlanta on January 29, but the Bears believe league rules entitle them to third-round picks in the 2026 and 2027 drafts.

NFL owners approved a 2020 proposal that grants teams compensatory third-round picks for developing minority front office talent who are then hired away as head coaches or general managers. However, the league is not recognizing Cunningham's hire as qualifying because Matt Ryan, Atlanta's president of football, is considered the team's primary football executive. This interpretation has left the Bears seeking clarification from the league office.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles expressed mixed feelings about the compensation rule itself, calling it "a little strange" while acknowledging its intent to incentivize staff development. "I want to make that very clear. There's a set of rules that has been put in place that I think can be applied to this situation," Poles said. The Bears are now waiting for the NFL's ruling on whether they will receive the compensatory picks, which are typically announced before the new league year in March.
