Bears Confirm Chicago Departure

The Chicago Bears made it clear Thursday they will leave the city, stating they have exhausted every opportunity to remain in Chicago. The franchise confirmed viable sites now exist only in Arlington Heights and Hammond, Indiana, ending a century-long presence in the city after moving from Decatur in 1921.

Indiana lawmakers attempt to lure the team with plans for a domed stadium in Hammond, about 25 miles from Soldier Field. Illinois responded with legislation offering tax breaks for megaprojects of at least $100 million, which would cover the Bears' proposed complex in Arlington Heights on land they already own.

The Bears have played at Soldier Field for over 50 years but have never owned their stadium since arriving in Chicago. Team president Kevin Warren expressed confidence both sites are excellent, with a decision expected by late spring or early summer. The team's departure marks the end of an era for Chicago's NFL history.
