Silver Urges Kawhi Leonard Probe to End Before Season

Adam Silver said the investigation into Kawhi Leonard and the LA Clippers for alleged salary‑cap circumvention must finish before the next season starts. The inquiry, led by the Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz law firm, focuses on money funneled to Leonard through a $28 million endorsement deal with the bankruptConstant company Aspiration, which also had a $300 million, 23‑year contract with the Clippers. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has denied knowing about the deal.

The probe has stalled due to bankruptcy court complications and reluctant witnesses, prompting frustration among fans who want resolution. A reported trade that would have sent Leonard to the Toronto Raptors for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first‑round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first‑round pick swap and two second‑round picks was put on hold until the investigation closed. Both sides agreed the trade could only be finalized if the Raptors assumed potential penalties tied to Leonard’s contract.

િયામાં Silver also addressed the second‑apron penalties, noting they could be renegotiated in upcoming labor talks. The board of governors discussed expansion plans for Las Vegas and Seattle, with Silver optimistic that new teams could begin play by the 2028‑29 season.

Micky Arison has been elected chair of the NBA board of governors, succeeding Larry Tanenbaum.
