Shai Gilgeous-Alexander solidified his lead in the NBA's Most Valuable Player race according to ESPN's latest straw poll. The Oklahoma City Thunder guard claimed 78 first-place votes and was the sole player named to all 100 ballots, averaging 31.8 points and 6.4 assists while shooting 55.4% for the Western Conference-leading Thunder. However, his lead comes amid significant injury-related uncertainty. Nikola Jokic, the reigning MVP, slipped to second place with 18 first-place votes but remains ineligible for awards after missing seven games with a bone bruise, with at least two more games likely.

His candidacy is further hampered by a 14-game absence, threatening his streak of top-two finishes. Victor Wembanyama surged to fourth with three first-place votes, averaging 24.4 points and 11.1 rebounds for the Spurs, though his 13 missed games also jeopardize his eligibility. The injury crisis extends to other contenders: Luka Doncic (12 missed), Kawhi Leonard (13 missed), and Anthony Edwards (10 missed) all face eligibility concerns, alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James. This turmoil creates openings, notably for Cade Cunningham and Jaylen Brown, whose performances are highlighted as the Celtics and Pistons lead the East.

The race remains volatile, hinging on player health and team performance over the critical stretch.
