NBPA Rebukes Bucks Over Giannis Antetokounmpo Shutdown

The National Basketball Players Association has publicly rebuked the Milwaukee Bucks over their handling of Giannis Antetokounmpo, accusing the team of potentially tanking by wanting to shut down the two-time NBA MVP for the remainder of the season. The union's statement came after reports that Antetokounmpo refused the Bucks' request to sit out, with the Greek star adamant about returning to the court despite his left knee injury.

The players' association cited the NBA's anti-tanking rules in its statement, emphasizing that Antetokounmpo is "healthy and ready to play." The union argued that the Player Participation Policy was designed to hold teams accountable and ensure star players compete when fit. "Unfortunately, anti-tanking policies are only as effective as their enforcement," the NBPA stated, adding that fans and broadcast partners suffer when ownership goes unchecked.

Milwaukee (29-42) sits in 11th place in the Eastern Conference, eight games behind the Charlotte Hornets for the final play-in tournament spot. Antetokounmpo has missed 35 games this season, the most of his career, with the Bucks posting a 12-23 record without him. Head coach Doc Rivers acknowledged the dilemma, saying the risks of Antetokounmpo returning might outweigh potential rewards, though he admitted he doesn't have a definitive answer.
