Marcus Smart has signed a two-year, $13 million contract with the Houston Rockets, sources told ESPN. The former NBA Defensive Player of the Year opted out of his $5.4 million player option with the Los Angeles Lakers to pursue this new opportunity. Smart will have a player option for the second season, giving him flexibility as he reunites with head coach Ime Udoka in Houston.

Smart's departure from the Lakers followed a strong final season where he led the team in plus-minus with opponents outscored by 256 points in his minutes. Over 62 games, he averaged 9.3 points, 3.0 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals while starting 54 contests. His playoff performance was even more impressive, recording 21 points, 10 assists and five steals in Game 3 against the Rockets when key teammates were unavailable.

At 32 years old, Smart brings defensive reliability and clutch experience to Houston's backcourt. His 2.4 steals per game in the postseason ranked among the league's best, demonstrating effectiveness despite his age. The Rockets now have a proven perimeter defender who impacts games beyond statistics.

Smart's addition provides veteran savvy and playoff experience for a young Rockets squad competing in the Western Conference.
