Magic Cut $14.5M Forward Isaac, Free Up $6.5M

On Saturday, the Orlando Magic released forward Jonathan Isaac from the roster. Isaac’s $14.5 million contract was about to be guaranteed on June 28, but the club chose to cut ties to avoid that liability. The decision saves the franchise $6.5 million in guaranteed payroll.

Drafted sixth overall in 2017, Isaac’s tenure in Orlando was marred by injury. He appeared in 70 or more games only twice over nine seasons, missing the full 2020‑21 and 2021‑22 campaigns after a torn left ACL. Last year he averaged 2.6 points and 2.5 rebounds in 52 games.

Isaac also missed the final 22 games of the season and the first‑round loss to Detroit because of a sprained left knee. With no remaining incentive, the Magic can re‑sign him if he stays free, but the current move eases their cap load and clears space for a new forward.

The waiver underscores Orlando’s intent to rebuild on a salary‑cap budget. By shedding a high‑cost, low‑output player, the Magic position themselves to add depth or pursue a trade. The decision signals a shift toward a more efficient roster, giving the franchise a clearer path to competitiveness in the coming season.
