New Orleans basketball operations chief Joe Dumars confirmed Tuesday that interim coach James Borrego remains firmly in the running for the permanent Pelicans job, despite the team finishing a disappointing 26-56 season. Dumars stated explicitly that while the team is still assessing options and will interview outside candidates, Borrego is definitely a contender for the role. This decision follows Borrego taking over after an early 2-10 start under Willie Green.

Dumars praised Borrego’s ability to maintain a positive atmosphere in the building, suggesting the interim coach prevented a complete collapse during a difficult stretch. The executive dismissed notions that retaining Borrego would signal complacency to a fanbase desperate for playoff success, stressing that the decision rests on the individual, not simply on changing personnel. Player Zion Williamson offered qualified support, noting Borrego managed the circumstances well after the mid-season takeover.

Borrego, who previously coached the Hornets, emphasized his commitment to developing the roster, pointing to the statistical improvements from rookies Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen. However, the team struggled in tight contests, going 10-24 in clutch games—defined as contests within five points late in the fourth quarter. Dumars concluded that while talent exists, inconsistency remains the primary obstacle to winning in New Orleans.

Borrego made a case for continuity, arguing an offseason in charge would allow him to address the team’s shortcomings more effectively than taking over mid-campaign. He cautioned against overreacting to coaching changes, asserting the motivation to improve is present within the current structure, making retention a viable option for the organization this summer.
